Our Green Schools Week was held from May 29th to June 2nd 2017. Miss Roslyn Coughlan and the pupils of the Green Schools Committee planned a wide range of informative and fun activities for the girls and boys to enjoy.
Early in the week the children took part in a Water Slogan competition and they were encouraged to find ways to conserve water at home and at school. A special Green Schools Assembly took place on Tuesday and we all learned more about the rainwater cycle.
On Wednesday, our Walk for Water helped to raise awareness about the issue of access to clean water in Africa. The girls got some small idea of what it is like to have no running water in the home when they carried containers around the camogie pitch several times.
We had a Low Energy Day on Thursday. This was certainly a challenge for adults and children alike as we were asked to refrain from using lights, laptops and whiteboards!
Friday was a Wear Green Day and our pupils got an opportunity to test their knowledge in a Water Quiz. The Green Schools Week concluded with a fantastic Green Food Party. Well done to everyone involved!
On May 30th we were delighted to receive a visit from the Barrack Street Junior Band. The young musicians entertained us with a great selection of tunes and the powerful sounds of the brass instruments filled the Halla. We are very proud of all of our Fourth and Fifth Class pupils who are now members of this famous band.
First Class have been enjoying the Read at Home initiative which was organised by our Home School Liaison Coordinator, Mrs. Laura O’Sullivan. The girls take turns bringing home a story book which they read with their family. They write or illustrate a response to the story and they share this with their class the following day. Bean Uí Chonaill is so pleased to see that the girls are beginning to develop a real love of reading.
