We would like to congratulate the girls and boys from Scoil Maria Assumpta and Morning Star Primary School who received their First Holy Communion on Saturday May 27th. The pupils from Second Class had been anticipating this wonderful event for a very long time. Each child played their own special part in the beautiful ceremony. The First Communion Mass was celebrated by Canon Murphy and Father Nugent. The children led the hymns, read from Scripture, recited the Prayers of the Faithful and brought the Offertory Gifts to the altar. They also prayed before and after Holy Communion, read the Reflection and performed the lovely dance, ‘Circle of Friends’.

We are immensely grateful to Ms. McAdoo, Ms. Laura O’Sullivan, Ms. Valerie Dennehy and Mr. Pádraig Lankford who prepared the children for their First Communion with such care and dedication. Well done to the moms and dads for making sure everyone was looking fantastic for the big event.

After Mass, the girls and their families returned to the school for light refreshments, a chat and lots of photographs. They had great fun with their friends and it was a day to remember for the rest of their lives.

Our Sixth Class pupils have begun reading the book, ‘Because of Winn-Dixie’, as part of the ‘One Book, One Community’ programme. Special guests who have connections to Scoil Maria Assumpta have been invited to visit the classroom to read extracts from the book. Ms. Holland and the girls were delighted when former principals, Mrs. Josephine Brennan and Mrs. Judy Mc Carthy, arrived to read for them. Former teachers, Sister Marie Fox and Mrs. Mary Philpott, and our school secretary, Cathryn Holley, also received a very warm reception when they came to see us. Our Home-School Liaison Coordinator, Mrs. Laura O’Sullivan, has been busy organising a number of literacy initiatives in the school including these book reading sessions. It is so nice to see the retired teachers joining us and sharing their memories with us once again.
