Well done to everyone who took part in the Swimming Gala which was held at the Mayfield pool on May 4th. The girls were thrilled to be given the opportunity to compete against pupils from other schools. We were particularly impressed to see how much progress the children in the junior classes have made over the course of the year. Our swimmers were so proud when they were presented with their medals and certificates for the individual and relay races. They could not wait to come back to school to tell everyone about their exciting day.
May is the month of Our Lady and we have noticed lovely May Altars appearing in classrooms throughout the school. The girls have also been attending Mass on the first Friday of each month.
Mrs. Barry’s Fourth Class pupils produced some excellent project work recently. They explored topics such as: ‘Italy’, ‘The Army’, ‘Thai Boxing’, ‘Family Names’ and ‘Japan’. The girls took a lot of inspiration from the fascinating books which they have seen during their frequent trips to the local library.
Mrs. Elliott’s Third Class have just commenced the Maths for Fun Programme. Parents have kindly volunteered to join the girls every Tuesday to play Maths games with them.
On May 9th the Scoil Maria Assumpta soccer team took part in the SPAR FAI Primary School Fives Munster Finals. The competition was held in the grounds of College Corinthians AFC in Douglas. The team played a series of matches against, Clare, Kerry and Tipperary. The pupils from Fourth Class, Fifth Class and Sixth Class and their teachers came along to support our young soccer players. The team played very well in each match but they were disappointed when they lost out to Ballyea of Clare on penalties in the final game. Nevertheless, they were pleased to be presented with the beautiful medals they received as runners-up.
We would like to congratulate the players and their trainers, Alana Hegarty, Barbara O’Connell and John Mc Hale on reaching the Munster Finals. They have given us all so much to cheer about over the past few months. Maith sibh go léir!
