The children arrived back to school on January 9th full of enthusiasm for the first term of 2017. One of our big new year’s resolutions at Scoil Maria Assumpta is to be kinder to the environment by conserving more water. The Green Schools Committee met to devise a plan to prevent wastage of water throughout the school. We have already cut back on the amount of bottled water being ordered each day for pupils and staff. We look forward to being presented with a third Green Flag if we succeed in reaching our water conservation targets for the year.
The girls in Second Class told us that they have resolved to be extra kind to each other this year. Their teacher, Ms. McAdoo has been recording their kind deeds each week and saving them in her special ‘Kindness Treasure Chest’.
Mrs. Griffin’s Fifth Class participated recently in the ‘Professor Fluffy Design a Bookmark’ competition run by UCC. We were very pleased to hear that Ciara Forde had won fifth prize in the overall competition and had earned a ‘Professor Fluffy Workshop’ for all of the girls in her class. This workshop will take place after Easter and it will introduce the concept of third level education to our primary school students. Professsor Fluffy will be there to welcome the girls on their arrival at UCC! Congratulations also to Emma Higgins and Sophie McCarthy whose bookmarks were highly commended by the panel of judges.
At last week’s assembly, all of the children who participated in the Suas Literacy Support Programme were delighted to be presented with a ten euro Eason’s book voucher. We are most grateful to the volunteer mentors from Abtran in Mahon who worked individually with the children on the AcceleRead AcceleWrite computer programme. We would also like to thank Aoife from the Suas Educational Development office who helped to organise and facilitate this unique literacy intervention service for our pupils.
