The festive season is in full swing at Scoil Maria Assumpta. The school garden has been transformed into a winter wonderland thanks to the efforts of Declan, our caretaker, Sinéad Hartnett, our art therapist and the girls in the senior classes. Each week Advent candles are lit and prayers are said around the crib.
December is a time when our pupils get many opportunities to showcase their musical talent and to entertain a wide variety of audiences. Mrs. Griffin’s Fifth Class and Ms. Holland’s Sixth Class sang at the Lough when the Christmas lights were lit on December 5th. They were thrilled when each girl was given a beautiful candle holder as a souvenir of the occasion.
Sorcha’s school choir sang a lovely medley of carols in the City Hall on the evening of December 7th in a concert which was held in support of Enable Ireland.
The New York Brass Band visited the school on December 13th and they played several lively, seasonal tunes for everyone in the Halla. Some of our Fifth Class pupils have joined the Barrack Street Band. They are able to play the saxophone, clarinet and flute. Our young musicians were delighted when the New York Brass Band invited them to join in their performance. We were very impressed by how much the girls have learned over the past number of months.
This year’s Christmas Carol Service was a spectacular event. The concert was based on the theme of ‘Christmas Time’. The students from Presentation Secondary School portrayed Christmas as a time for Hope, Giving, Forgiveness, Peace and Reflection. The pupils from Scoil Maria Assumpta portrayed Christmas as a time for Love, Happiness, Wonder, Friendship, Faith and Family. The girls sang a delightful selection
of Christmas carols including, ‘A Ray of Hope’, ‘Maybe This Christmas’, ‘Who Could Imagine a King?’, ’The Wexford Carol’, ‘Do You Hear What I hear?’, ‘Little Drummer Boy’ and ‘Peace on Earth’. The beautiful, joyous and moving service ended with a reflection read by the senior students and a lovely blessing by Fr. Murphy.
This was the first year that choirs from the two schools came together and were united as one voice. It was a wonderful experience for both adults and children. Well done everyone who helped to make the carol service so special.
We got a huge surprise last week when we heard that Santa, Mrs. Claus and Rudolf will be taking time out of their hectic schedule to visit the school. Our principal, Mrs. Fitzsimons, has it on good authority that Santa and his team hope to arrive on December 20th in their fabulous vintage Jaguar car which will be filled to the brim with gifts for all of our lucky little girls and boys!
Thank you so much Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus for your amazing kindness and generosity!
Scoil Maria Assumpta will close for the Christmas holidays on December 22nd 2016. Nollaig Shona agus beannachtaí an tséasúir d’ár gcáirde go léir!
