The 2016-2017 school year got off to a great start. We opened our very first ASD classroom and we look forward to getting to know the children and their parents. Twenty five Junior Infants have now entered Miss Roslyn Coughlan’s class and we also have new pupils in First Class, Third Class and Fifth Class. We hope that everyone will have a happy and rewarding experience in Scoil Maria Assumpta.

The Lord Mayor of Cork visited us on September 5th 2016. Cllr. Des Cahill received a very warm reception from pupils, parents and staff and he was serenaded with a sweet rendition of our lovely school song. The Lord Mayor spoke to the children about the importance of being fair to each other. He also promised to send the girls a ‘Positivity Box’ so that they can record the good things that happen each day in their lives. Then he gave everyone a great reason to be happy when he announced, ‘Homework Off!’

The children had plenty of questions about the beautiful chain of office which they learned was made before the time of the French Revolution. They also wanted to know if the Lord Mayor lives in a big house and how he got to be so famous!

Our principal, Mrs. Fitzsimons, presented a cheque in aid of Marymount Hospice to our special guest on behalf of the entire school community. The Attendence Certificates which are issued annually by the City Hall were then presented to our pupils by the Lord Mayor.

The girls who had full attendance throughout last year are: Caoimhe Hull, Muireann Mc Hale, Grace O’Neill, Laoise Barry, Ava Kiely, Erin Lyons, Ally Warren, Clodagh Crowley and Shauna Delea. Several pupils also had records of full attendance for two years. This list includes Lacey Kelly, Laura O’Sullivan, Michalina Dabrowska, Abbi Brady, Aideen Mullins and Kaylee Walsh. Evelyn Mullins, Mary Osubor, Sophie Thompson, Kayleigh Mc Intyre and Abbey Hickey were present in school every day for a very impressive total of three years. Shannon Murphy did not miss a day for a fantastic total of four years while Linh Healy had full attendance for an amazing period of five years! Well done to everyone!!
