The Scoil Maria Assumpta end of year concert was a spectacular success. The title of the show was ‘Musical Mayhem’ and it was held on the evenings of June 20th and 21st. The junior classes performed a fantastic selection of well-loved songs from ‘The Lion King’, ‘Oliver’, ‘Annie’ and ‘The Little Mermaid’. The senior classes treated us to some very entertaining numbers from ‘Hairspray’, ‘Les Miserables’ and ‘Mamma Mia’. The pupils from Second, Third and Fourth Classes also sang the songs which they had performed for Cór Fhéile na Scol. The show was a most professional production. The costumes and props were delightful and Janet Connolly had painted a wonderful back-drop for the stage. Tara O’Connor, our Speech and Drama teacher, brought out the best in each of the young actors with her skillful direction and choreography. The tickets for the spot prizes sold out quickly during the interval and we are truly grateful to everyone in the community who donated such lovely prizes.
Miss Scannell’s First Class and Mrs. O’Sullivan’s Fourth Class have just completed their Junior Achievement courses. Catherine Lynch-O’Brien from the PM Group taught the younger girls about the role of families in the community and highlighted the different services in the neighbourhood. The Fourth Class programme was facilitated by Emma Hayes from the New York Mellon Company. She helped the class understand how to set up a company as a sole trader and she also explained how businesses expand. The girls in both classes had great fun and they really appreciated Emma and Catherine’s weekly visits.
On the morning of June 17th a special flag raising ceremony was held in the school garden. Miss Roslyn Coughlan and Miss Alana Hegarty raised our Energy Conservation Green Flag. The wonderful work accomplished by these teachers and the pupils of the Green Schools Committee was acknowledged by our Principal, Mrs. Fitzsimons. Ciara Elliot and Elena Crowley from Sixth Class addressed the crowd and spoke eloquently of the fantastic insight and experience they had gained as members of the committee. Afterwards Ms. Eileen Haran from the Health Service Executive raised our new National Healthy Ireland HSE Health Promoting School Flag. This flag was awarded to Scoil Maria Assumpta in recognition of our long-term commitment to addressing the health and well-being of the entire school community. Well done to Mrs. Mary Barry who has kept health promotion to the fore-front in her work as Home School Liaison Coordinator over the past five years. Mrs. Nora O’Callaghan, one of our former teachers, was warmly welcomed to the gathering. Mrs. O’Callaghan had worked in the area of health promotion in the school for several years. Photographer, Des Barry, also joined us for the occasion. We look forward to seeing the photos in the ‘Evening Echo’ or the ‘Irish Examiner’. The teachers would like to thank the members of the Presentation Sisters Congregation who provided the funding for the excellent well-being programme which was organised this year for our children and staff.
The Sixth Class Graduation Mass was held on Friday June 24th. It was a very moving ceremony and everyone knew it would be the last time that the girls, their parents and teachers would gather together as a group in the Halla. Mrs. Griffin and the entire staff will miss this wonderful class so much. We would like to thank the girls for the unique contribution each one of them made to our school over the years. We wish them every happiness and success in life as they make the big transition to second level education. Go n-éirí go geal libh i gcónaí!
The school will close for the holidays on Thursday June 30th. Have a safe and happy summer from all at Scoil Maria Assumpta! Go dté sibh slán.
